I walked into a Huawei store in Shanghai and found a Porsche.
While in China just recently, I was moved to reflect about luxury.
Here I was: surrounded by smartphones, tablets and connected watches.
But also diamond watches, a high-end Berline, an impressive SUV β and a sports car.
Apple, Samsung, Rolex, Lexus, Mercedes and Porsche lookalikes.
In a communist country π€―
I realised I had once defined luxury exactly like that.
Surrounded by all this opulence, I found myself reconnecting with the thing I now value most.
Though I love my creature comforts, my favourite luxury is time to think.
The ambitious professionals I speak with typically have none of it.
Not because their calendars are full but because they prioritise doing over reflecting.
Delivering over strategizing.
Rat race over purpose-led life.
Yet another case of Relationship Friction with oneself:
the erosion of the self that comes from not listening to oneself.
Coachees come to me from a place of crisis.
Something literally ruining their work life.
They want it sorted ASAP.
I invite them to breathe.
The Relationship Wisdom pivot: pause and begin to hear yourself.
What insight bubbles up?
What is your intuition telling you?
How are you doing β really?
As you look forward to your well-deserved summer break, enjoy these luxuries:
And the time to think by the seashore or the pool.
This may be the most valuable thing you do all summer.
