Have you been secretly wondering if it’s time to quit? A checklist to make that important call.
In this age of AI replacement, forward-thinking professionals are considering their career prospects proactively and critically: “How do I remain relevant and value-adding?”, they ask.
More and more clients are now admitting they wonder “how long I can last” as one bravely put it.
I feel this growing build-up of pressure. Few seem to know how to think about this AI risk.
That uncomfortable wondering is Relationship Friction with yourself.
The friction between what you want and what you fear.
The tension between how you see yourself and what a transition would demand of you.
When that friction goes unexamined, people either suppress the unease or have an unhelpful, knee-jerk reaction.
The Relationship Wisdom pivot: give your wondering some structure to think it through.
So you don’t ignore it. Or react to it too quickly.
Here is a roadmap to orient yourself across some core themes:
⛓️💥Explore what your job represents: How much does your job define you? Does your job matter to anyone else: does your mother or partner care how you earn your living?
🔎Surface your relationship to financial volatility: How will you cope with the income loss and the financial volatility that will follow? What are your new income goals?
🛠️ Assess your ability to operate independently: Do you know where and how to find your clients? Will you be able to be salesperson, accountant, and IT support too?
🎢 Understand your emotional dynamics: How good are you at coping with uncertainty? Do you fear isolation in the absence of coworkers? What might anxiety look like for you?
💡Clarify what is motivating you: What is your “craving for freedom” really about? What will you lose and how much will you miss it? What will make this reinvention meaningful?
I have the battle scars to prove it: leaving that office job is not for the faint of heart.
It is undoubtedly one of the hardest decisions you will ever face.
Structure will not make the decision for you. But it will ensure fear does not make it for you either.
