My client said it with a heavy sigh.
I replied: “Too bad because then it will be none of your fixing.”
I invited her to draw a responsibility camembert.
When I mention a French cheese, clients find it amusing and fill it out with a little smile.
Taking responsibility is heavy and a bit of levity seems to help.
At first, she didn’t include herself.
She thought she had no part in it.
She was looking for exoneration.
It’s your manager who’s blind to your talent and fails to promote you.
It’s your client who’s out of touch and guilty of excessive demands.
My client also wanted to be absolved of any guilt or failure.
The cost of absolution is powerlessness.
Being absent from the camembert removed her from the equation.
If you truly have no part in a situation, then you have no influence over how it might evolve.

Taking appropriate responsibility affords you leverage you otherwise forego.
