“Alexandra, you’re already out of a job,” an AI creator warned me recently.
AI has several PhDs in psychology. As such, it can give you well-meaning advice.
It will list relationship skills, explain active listening, and offer tips to resolve conflict.
It will write you a long recipe about how to influence. It knows all about leadership.
But it cannot teach you Relationship Wisdom.
That’s because AI is optimized to remove Relationship Friction.
It is always nice. Endlessly patient. Frictionless, wouldn’t you agree?
Even when you ask it to be critical, its challenges feel hollow.
Because it is built to affirm, AI will make you feel seen in ways your colleagues and companions often fail to do. Hurt by human failings, many already find AI’s siren song irresistible.
They feel that unconscious pull to interact with AI because it’s so easy. Never disappointing.
With AI, there is zero Relationship Friction.
Without Relationship Friction however, there is no opportunity to develop Relationship Wisdom.
Don’t you see that AI is too much of a sycophant for you to hope it will expand your horizons?
Interacting with AI will actually make you worse at interacting with people.
Your lovely frictionless AI assistant is stifling your personal growth.
In a gruelling human world, most of us dread Relationship Friction. We treat it as a necessary evil to manage in order to survive the jungle out there. Relationship Wisdom is our survival kit.
But here is today’s pivot: Relationship Friction’s very grittiness is its value.
As you know, we learn best when uncomfortable.
Be grateful Relationship Friction repeatedly takes you out of your comfort zone.
Discomfort tests your mettle.
It forces you to course-correct—often painfully.
It demands you stand up for yourself—frequently courageously.
It requires you to find meaning in adversity—sometimes agonizingly.
As a coach, I bring my clients back to that place of discomfort.
To foster growth in a safe way. Not to mollycoddle into complacency.
I work with people who detest Relationship Friction but want to grow into Relationship Wisdom.
I’m currently doing my best work – and more of it every day.
Relationship Wisdom is your unique path to grow into the person you choose to become.
Someone not better. Someone broader, richer.
Someone not just authentic. Someone not just unique.
Someone others will notice, remember, and miss.
Who are you today? Who do you wish to become? How do you want to be remembered?
